I recently found Skyview Outdoor store in Surrey and found Karla. Karla is a dictionary of hiking information. I could of spent the day picking her brain.
I went to Skyview to find a new pair of hiking boots. With my plans to step out of my comfort zone & challenge myself more this year, I decided to get a better shoe with an aggressive tread. As I tried on boot after boot my foot couldn't find a home until I met, Apolo. The tread was aggressive, waterproof boot, ankle stability, and a good quality boot that would last through my many Km's I was planning to travel.
Karla says the most important things to know when boot shopping is: Your feet should have 1/4-2 inches room in the front as the longer you are on your feet the more they will swell and your feet need that room so you don't get blisters. You should have no heel lifting in the back...this causes blisters and to wear the socks you plan on wearing with your shoes so you get a proper fit. A great way to tie your boots is when looping them at the end is to tie 1, 3 , 2 series. It gives you more support.
I found Karla to be a wealth of knowledge and very well spoken. MEC gave me an idea to tie my boot as a 1, 2 and on 3 looping it downward.
These are just some ideas of ways to help your feet stay happy on your adventures. Happy feet equals a happy hiker! Don't feel overwhelmed when boot shopping...take your time and visit many stores. Your feet will thank you for it.
As a footnote: Blister prevention...Wear socks inside out and if using tape to prevent blisters put take on length wise instead of width.
