Lower Falls: Golden Ears Provincial Park: Maple Ridge
Trail Key:
Easy, views, dog friendly (leashed), kid friendly
Elevation: 1+ K return
Elevation: Flat
Dogs: Yes; leashed
Pit Toilet: yes-trail-head start
Hiking Checklist:
Water, snacks, tell someone
Directions: Drive to Golden Ears Provincial Park and as far as you can go along the paved road which will turn into gravel. Park in the day parking at Gold Creek parking lot. Drive all the way along the paved road and along the gravel road. Cross a bridge and you will see the parking lot.
Trail: Golden Ears Lower Falls is a walk along Gold Creek to the 10 meter high falls. The SP to Lower Falls is at the other end of the parking lot (away from the pit toilets.) As you start walking along the wide road like trail you will see a bigger sign. The rail is well marked with several view points along the way and beach access. There's also a lovely big tree. Keep going along and before you know it you'll hear the falls. The best time is the spring months where the falls are roaring. There's a bench and a pit toilet, if you need one. Behind the bench is a trail that takes you tot he upper falls. There is a fence with words written, "respect the falls." I would say that you can see them behind the fence and would say that venturing along the slippery rocks will possibly harm you. Once you have filed your heart and camera head back the way you came.
You can add another km to the walk by passing where you parked earlier, cross the road and head to the North Beach Trail. There is a beach area where you can have lunch or a little rest before heading home. I warn you there are lots of bugs at the beach area. Make sure you wear repellent! You can also add some other trails making this hike longer. Golden Ears is full of beauty. Happy & safe trails!
